Will Captain Batel Die In Strange New Worlds?

-

Star Trek: Strange New World’s “Gorn Conflict” is getting closer and closer. For example, we’ve already seen Admiral Robert April (Adrian Holmes) being aware of the oncoming threat. Additionally, Starfleet seems to be gearing up for a conflict. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was even promoted to Fleet Captain, but then lost it. However, we ask ourselves, Will Melanie Scrofano’s Captain Batel Die in Strange New Worlds?

Batel, who only just got her first name of “Marie”, was introduced in the Strange New Worlds premiere episode. It’s quickly established she is in a relationship with Pike. However, their jobs seem to create conflicts in the relationship. For example, her being an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s office. Batel is also the captain of the USS Cayuga. We currently don’t know what class of starship this is. It’s either a Consitution class, like the USS Enterprise, or a Sombra class. The starship is vital for what is coming up!

SPOILER WARNING

While this is written as a theory article, we will be deserting trailer clips and official Star Trek PR material for use as examples. – Trek Central does NOT receive advanced episodes. Therefore, our theories are based on what we watch alongside the community! 🖖

The Gorn Conflict

We’ve known for some time that The Gorn are an upcoming threat to Starfleet. Admiral April monitors the situation in Episode One of Season 2 of Strange New Worlds. However, trailers reveal that this conflict may be heating up very soon. For example, in one trailer, we see a Starfleet starship destroyed. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) appear to investigate the ship in EVA suits. At one point, both characters seem to exit via the bridge dome as the ship burns up in the atmosphere.

Now, this scene might follow another. We began asking Will Captain Batel Die after seeing her in one of the main trailers for Strange New Worlds. Batel is present on the surface of an unknown planet that appears to have a Human colony. While looking into the sky, she sees an alien ship descending over the colony. This ship resembles The Gorn “mother ship” seen in Season One, Episode 4 of Strange New Worlds. “Memento Mori” was the first episode introducing the modern Gorn in Star Trek. But we didn’t see them!

Batel says, “My God”, almost like she knows what is approaching. If we theorise, it is likely the same planet in which we see the destroyed starship in orbit. Back to that ship, this is likely the USS Cayuga, Batel’s command ship. The most recent episode, “Subspace Rhaposdy“, ends with Batel being assigned to a “Priority One” mission, likely what we see her encounter in the upcoming Season Finale.

Later scenes in other trailers show Captain Pike and an away team visiting the human colony, which is now burned out and destroyed. Likely as Mr Spock’s away team investigate the ship in orbit.

Will Captain Batel Die?

Even if the Cayuga is destroyed in orbit, without Batel onboard, we still ask ourselves, will Captain Batel Die? She is present on the planetside of the Human colony. Therefore, she might have a more gruesome fate awaiting her. Thanks to season one and the character of La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), we know what happens to those captured by The Gorn. Strange New Worlds could make the character of Batel have a horrific fate if she is taken to one of The Gorn planets and hunted.

Additionally, she could end up like former Chief Engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak). He took his own life rather than have The Gorn hatchlings take his own. Captain Pike could do something drastic if something like this happened to Batel. This is an avenue we have to explore when talking about the idea of Captain Batel Dieing in Strange New Worlds. Both characters are attached. We are wondering if Captain Pike will disobey orders to mount a rescue for Batel.

Think about it. It’s evident in season two, episode one, “The Broken Circle“, that Pike thinks the “Top brass” are keeping something under wraps. Therefore, If Batel goes missing and Admiral April does not let Pike go after her, he could violate orders.

A Clue On The Topic of “Captain Batel Die”?

So after theorising and writing about this, we might have more evidence. Furthermore, maybe even an answer to this question. The latest Ready Room Aftershow for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has given us a glimpse at the upcoming season finale. This sees Captain Pike and the Enterprise crew encountering the destroyed starship we mentioned above. Based on their dialogue, and the mention of Captain Batel, it’s safe to assume this is the USS Cayuga. Batel’s fate is not looking good right now. The Gorn are back.

Conclusion

What will happen with Captain Batel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds remains to be seen. The next episode is the Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover event. I don’t foresee any Gorn activity happening in this episode. Perhaps a mention of something going on. We’ll have to wait and see. Those attending San Diego Comic Con 2023 can get an exclusive screening of the episode before anyone else.
