Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 Wraps Filming!

-

That’s a wrap! It seems Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 has completed filming! Multiple cast members of the 32nd-century Star Trek series have announced they have wrapped filming. A second season of the Academy series was ordered in October 2024, well before the first season began airing. However, the show’s reception among the Star Trek community has been mixed. Still, the end of filming for this series could see big changes for the Star Trek Universe.

As it stands, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the last in-production live-action Star Trek series under Head of Star Trek, Alex Kurtzman. With the conclusion of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we are aware of no other series currently in production on Paramount+. It’s worth noting that Starfleet Academy is still airing its first season and has to complete post-production on the second season. Strange New Worlds still has Season 4 and Season 5 to air.

Starfleet Academy Season 2 Wraps!

At the time of writing, only a few cast members have confirmed they have completed filming on Starfleet Academy. Actress Kerrice Brooks, who plays Series Acclimation Mil, aka “Sam”, has confirmed via Instagram that she has wrapped. Comedian and Actress Gina Yashere, who plays Academy Commander Lura Thok, also confirmed in an Instagram story. Additionally, Karim Diané, who plays Klingon Jay-Den Kraag, has confirmed they are done.

Diané has posted on Tuesday, 24th, that Starfleet Academy has wrapped production. A Wrap party for the cast and crew is taking place tonight, it would seem.

It seems filming concluded over the weekend. For example, Gina Yashere wrapped filming sometime last week and has since been on the Star Trek Cruise, which set sail from the Caribbean on Friday. Meanwhile, it seems Brooks and Dinae wrapped over the weekend, as confirmed via their Instagram stories. Assistant Director Jess Smallwood shared Karim’s last day as his Klingon character. The second season has been filming at the Star Trek stage at Pinewood Studios in Toronto.

The season finale of Starfleet Academy Season Two has been directed by Alex Kurtzman. He also directed the first two episodes of Season One. Not much is known about the second season at the moment. However, from the Instagram story posted by Kerrice Brooks, we can see actress Zoë Steiner in an Academy uniform, not the Starfleet War College uniform. This tells us that by either season one or season two, she transferred to Starfleet Academy.

A Season 3 for Starfleet Academy?

A third season for Starfleet Academy is currently up in the air. We don’t know what this possibility looks like at the moment. Additionally, with multiple factors in play, it’s really hard to estimate whether this Star Trek show will go anywhere else after the conclusion of the second season. A major factor is Paramount Global’s acquisition by Skydance Media in 2025. It’s entirely possible the new owners of the Star Trek franchise wish to take it in a different direction.

Another factor is the general reception of Starfleet Academy as a series. While the series has been highly rated by critics, gauging the general fan consensus is somewhat difficult. Even more so, according to ratings site Nielsen, Starfleet Academy has not ranked in the top 10 of the streaming charts over the last two weeks. This isn’t a major red flag, but it does raise questions about how it will affect Paramount’s decisions on this series in the coming months.

I really hope we don’t see a similar situation to what happened to Star Trek: Prodigy. Fans may remember when Paramount cancelled the series, then decided not to air the already-produced second season on its own platform, instead selling it to other streaming services like France TV and eventually Netflix. Given this, it’s entirely possible we could see a similar situation with Starfleet Academy Season 2 if the first season doesn’t reach the heights the studio expects. Of course, we will need to wait and see.

Is This The End of the Alex Kurtzman Star Trek Era?

As mentioned at the start, the end of Starfleet Academy marks the effective end of Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek era. Currently, we know that his contract expires at the end of 2026. During the press junket for Academy, Kurtzman gave an update on his feelings about the future of his Star Trek career. Speaking to Cinemablend, Kurtzman said, “Nothing I can share publicly, but I have a reason to feel the future is bright.”

Kurtzman also gave a long interview with The Anklerback in January 2026. During that interview, he mentioned that he had yet to meet Paramount-Skydance’s new CEO, David Ellison. He commented that he was waiting until after he wrapped filming Starfleet Academy season 2. Therefore, given that the series has just wrapped, it’s possible to schedule a meeting sometime in March. If it has not happned before-hand.

Starfleet Academy is the seventh Star Trek series that Alex Kurtzman has launched, but will it be his last? While the decision is yet to be made, Kurtzman has previously hinted that more shows are in development. During an interview with SFX Magazine, he said, “quite a few exciting things” were in the works, but wouldn’t say more. However, it’s worth noting that the interview with SFX was done before Paramount-Skydance announced the new Star Trek movie by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

Interesting Times for the Star Trek Universe!

This year is Star Trek’s 60th Anniversary, a big celebration for the legendary franchise. However, rather than the joy of celebrating all that has come before and will come after, the franchise finds itself in a difficult position. For example, it would look very strange if Kurtzman departs in the 60th year and a massive shakeup of live-action Star Trek begins. Honestly, it’s going to be a bit of a mess for a while.

At the time of writing this article, Paramount+ have not officially commented on the conclusion of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s filming. We may not get one. However, given the interesting situation the Star Trek Universe finds itself in, the next move by Paramount-Skydance will be very interesting for fans of this legendary universe.

For now… Live Long and Propser my friends!
