Strange New Worlds Reveals from NYCC!

-

The Star Trek Universe promised us news, reveals, and maybe a surprise. This year’s New York Comic Con (NYCC) certainly had its surprises, especially for the upcoming Starfleet Academy series set to premiere in January. And for Strange New World fans, we got a brand-new look at Season 4! Plus the first images, and some behind-the-scenes teases.

Let’s dive in and see what Strange New Insights Comic Con delivered!

Boldly Going to New York Comic Con!

Despite being in the middle of filming the fifth and final season of Strange New Worlds, the cast and producers made the trek to this year’s New York Comic Con! The panel included Ethan Peck (Spock), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), Melissa Navia (Ortegas)and Martin Quinn (Scotty). As well as Executive Producers and co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, and franchise boss Alex Kurtzman.

While the cast and producers were keeping their cards very close to the chest, the panel did deliver a brand-new look at the season. The producers promise to up the ante yet again for Season 4. They’re “not pulling any punches” when it comes to the storytelling for new episodes. And will follow up on some of the traumatic events of Season 3.

In the upcoming fourth season, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise—led by Captain Christopher Pike—embarks on a series of thrilling and emotional adventures across the stars. As they journey to strange new worlds, they will battle inner demons and external threats, encounter colorful new characters, reunite with familiar faces and confront terrifying aliens. Through it all, they strive to embrace a bright, hopeful future.

Into the Storm

The Star Trek Universe panel gave us a look at Season 4 of Strange New Worlds, with nearly 5 minutes of footage from the first episode. The Enterprise is shown exploring space anomalies, with the crew staring out in awe. It makes for a nice change of pace, emphasising the magic of the “new” in Strange New Worlds.

Before long, the ship picks up a distress signal and gets dragged into a storm with some almost nauseating camera movement. It’s here that the clip basically ends, with the Enterprise stranded and without power, no weapons or communications available. What follows is a setup for an exploration mission to gather resources to repair the ship on a truly alien world.

While there’s nothing in the way of bombshell reveals, it is far more Star Trek than the Vulcan clip that was Season 3’s First Look. And less whacky than a puppet episode sneak peek. There are echoes of the franchise’s ethos, and it’s suitably action-packed and exciting. It’s also reassuring that heading into Season 4, the show looks to be maintaining its high standard of visual effects.

It’s Not Just Puppets

Our first sneak peek of Strange New Worlds season 4 took Pike and the Enterprise into the puppet-verse! The Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con revealed the short and sweet clip earlier this year. It gave us our first look at high-haired, puppet Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), poised in the centre chair of the Enterprise bridge.

The “puppet episode” is directed by Jordan Canning (Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock) with the puppets in question created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. So that technically makes them Muppets!

Previous attempts by the show to take big swings for left field include Season 2’s musical episode ‘Subspace Rhapsody’. Another example is Season 3’s more recent ‘A Space Adventure Hour’, with both episodes sparking heated debates. While Rhapsody – featuring an iconic Klingon Boyband – landed more than it missed, A Space Adventure Hour wasn’t so lucky. It also saw SNW tumble out of the official Top 10 streaming shows for the rest of the season. So Muppet Adventures for the Enterprise crew is going to be an interesting watch, as much for the episode as the post-show fan debates.

The future of the series…

Strange New Worlds is currently filming its fifth and final season in Toronto, Canada. Paramount preemptively announced its renewal earlier this year, before Season 3 aired. Season 4 also completed filming some months ago and should be ready to air next year. Whether Paramount chose to release in 2026 or not is another matter. We’re just hoping it’s not another two-year wait.

Paramount has also decided to disappointingly shorten the fifth season run to just 6 episodes. And speculation is high that the producers’ aim is to create the footing for their ‘Year One’ pitch. So the series may end with Captain James T. Kirk’s first days, weeks, or even months in command of the Enterprise, prior to The Original Series’ first episodes.

Fan reception of the idea floated by Akiva Goldsman has been lukewarm at best. However, writing and filming take place long before fans even see previous seasons. So while any feedback will be mute, we can but hope for a fun ride in Season 4. And a fitting farewell for Captain Pike and his original crew in Season 5.
