Just over one week ago, Paramount confirmed that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy would end with its upcoming second season. This was shattering news for fans of the 12th live-action Star Trek series in the franchise. Production for the second season only wrapped up in February 2026, with the first season concluding in March 2026. However, fans are not ready to let this Star Trek series vanish into the darkness. A fan petition on Change.org has been started, which in the space of one week, has surpassed 25,000+ Signatures.
It’s no secret that Starfleet Academy’s first season out in the final frontier has had a rocky ride. The series premiered on Paramount+ in January 2026, with two episodes. This introduced us to the new cadets of the Academy, as well as the crew of the USS Athena. Upon airing, the series received favourable critical reviews. However, the new series was reported to have been the subject of review bombing upon initial release.

Warp Speed for Fan Petition
Say what you will about Star Trek fans, when they want to step up, they step up. The “Renew ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ for a third season” petition was started on March 23rd 2026, the day of the cancellation. However, in just one week, it has surpassed 25,000 signatures. This is on Change.org, which tracks Verified Signatures for community petitions. Over 900+ fans have also left comments, both in text and video, showing their support for Starfleet Academy! You can read them all on the page.
Trek Central reported that the petition had surpassed 12,000 signatures on March 28th. Less than 24 hours later, the petition has surpassed 21,000 signatures. I will say, it’s unfortunate that the petition uses AI-generated artwork on the thumbnail… when there are some great images from the show to use. Hopefully, that is updated. Regardless, there is no denying that fans are hungry for more Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. While it’s early days, who knows how far this petition will grow.
What is fun is reading the comments and watching the videos from Star Trek fans. Trekkies have always been passionate about the things they love. New names, signatures, and comments are continually being added to this petition. Seemingly, as more fans become aware of this petition. Might we see it gain more momentum as we head into the first week of April 2026?

A Counter Petition
It’s worth noting that some members of the Star Trek community have started an alternate petition. This is under the title of “Urge Paramount to shelve Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2“. It seems these people are calling for the second season, which has been filmed and is in post-production, to never see the light of day. Basically, for Paramount to never air it. The petition was started on March 25th and has since only garnered 590 signatures.
This petition cites what studio Warner Bros. Discovery previously did to the completed Batgirl film. This movie was filmed entirely in March 2022, but later that year, in August 2022, Warner announced that, while it was in post-production, the studio had decided not to release it. According to a statement, this was due to cost-cutting measures and a refocus of their theatrical release strategy.
The shelving of a nearly complete, big-budget film from a major studio was considered an unprecedented move and drew backlash from audiences, commentators, and some executives, while the creatives involved received support from industry professionals.

Would Paramount do this? It’s unknown at this point in time. However, with the recent Paramount-Skydance merger, they are in the process of saving money. Could Star Trek: Starfleet Academy become a casualty of that? We will need to wait and see.
Do Fan Petitions & Movements Actually Work?
Simply answer, Yes… but only sometimes. Fan movements, which sometimes involve petitions, have been used for over 50 years. Star Trek: The Original Series saw a massive letter-writing campaign when it neared cancellation following a low-rated second season. Bjo and John Trimble devised a grassroots letter-writing campaign that saved the show and resulted in a third season. If it were not for the pair’s efforts, along with a dedicated community of Trekkies, we would not be writing this article today.
Sci-Fi fans may remember a show called “The Expanse“, which ex-Star Trek alumni worked on. The Syfy channel cancelled the series following its third season. However, a fan petition was started and eventually received over 138,000 signatures from passionate fans. The result? Amazon picked up the series and produced three more seasons for its streaming platform, Prime Video.
Sometimes, they do not work. When Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled with its fourth season, a fan website was set up to raise funds for a potential fifth season. While Trekkies raised $32 Million, it was unsuccessful. Thankfully, everybody was refunded. Since the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard Season 3, fans have asked for a “Star Trek: Legacy” series. A petition for this potential spin-off sits at around 65,000 signatures. Nothing has happened in terms of a Legacy series at Paramount at the moment.

The Future of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Ultimately, the future of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is in two places. For the moment, we are not getting anything past the second season. However, will we actually get to see the second season? It’s a bit odd at the moment. The reason I say this is because Paramount has previously cancelled a show, and then not aired the already finished second season. This was the case with the animated series of Star Trek: Prodigy. It was cancelled, and Paramount+ sold the broadcast rights to a variety of other streamers.
Will this happen with Starfleet Academy? Hopefully not, but who knows? A lot is going on behind the scenes at the moment. Especially with Paramount-Skydance also in the process of acquiring Warner Bros., this puts the overall business into significant debt. Money that will need to be recovered from cost-cutting and various other revenue sources.
Regardless of what happens, it would be a shame for any Star Trek series to be given the “Batgirl Treatment“. We’ll keep an eye on the movements surrounding Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and keep you all up to date.
