New York Comic Con is back once again! Paramount+ beamed down Star Trek for a panel at NYCC 2023. However, the Star Trek Universe panel also had the surprise of a Star Trek: Lower Decks screening. Episode eight of Season 4 was screened for Trekkkies in attendance. Lower Decks Showrunner Mike McMahan also beamed down to share insights on the recent adventures of Lower Deckers. McMahan revealed that fan favourite character T’Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) would be in the next season of the series.
Star Trek’s current Franchise Boss, Alex Kurtzman, was in attendance. He took the time to comment on how it’s great to be back on stage. Additionally, Kurtzman highlighted the recent Star Trek: Prodigy news. He also took the time to thank fans for the “#SaveStarTrekProdigy” campaign.
Back To Work For The Star Trek Universe
Alex Kurtzman briefly spoke about the current state of the Star Trek universe. He also hinted at the fact there is more to come. While being on stage at NYCC 2023, Kurtzman offered an update on Star Trek: Discovery. The fifth and final season of the series is now expected in early 2024. However, Kurtzman revealed that Trekkies are in for an “incredibly satisfying ending” for the show. No release date for the final season has been confirmed yet.
The Starfleet Academy series is about to get off the ground. For example, Kurtzman revealed that the writer’s room reopened in the past week. Previously, it was grounded due to the Writers Guild of America strikes. As these have been resolved, the writer’s room can return to work on crafting this next adventure. Speaking of the writer’s room, it was mentioned that Lower Deck’s Tawny Newsome is writing on the series. Kurtzman added, “She’s a genius”.
As we reported, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 is in the works. The third season of Anson Mount’s Captain Pike series was due to film right before the WGA and SAG strikes. However, it remains in the works at the moment. Therefore, as soon as the SAG strike is resolved, they will likely return to work as soon as possible. Kurtzman also teased fans that more Star Trek is to come beyond Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 movie.
Star Trek’s Kid Cudi Collaboration
NYCC 2023 saw the debut of the Star Trek x Kid Cudi brand collaboration. Fans have gotten a first look at the streetwear collection at New York Comic Con. Featuring Star Trek-inspired mantras like “Live Long and Rage,” the Kid Cudi x Star Trek capsule collection will include tees, crewnecks, hoodies, a custom button-up t-shirt and a colourful leather varsity jacket with robust chenille and embroidery details.
Kid Cudi joined Alex Kurtzman on stage at NYCC. However, Paramount+ also released a brand new behind-the-scenes video. In the video, which you can watch below, Cudi talks about his inspiration for his latest song. Titled “Heaven’s Galaxy”, the song was released on Thursday, the 12th of October. The star also talks about Star Trek’s impact on his life.
IDW Publishing Reveals New Star Trek Comic Series
Our friends at IDW Publishing had a panel on Star Trek comics at NYCC. It was revealed that a new series will debut in February 2024. Titled “Star Trek: Sons of Star Trek“, the series follows on from the “Day of Blood“. However, this time, it follows Jake Sisko as he struggles to find his place in the universe after the return of his father, Benjamin Sisko.
Written by Morgan Hampton and with art by Angel Hernandez, the new series pairs Jake Sisko and Alexander Rozhenko together. However, Alexander is haunted by his actions during the bloody coup and is unsure of his ability to atone for the devastation he caused. The pair are thrust into an alternate universe. As officers aboard the U.S.S. Burton, Jake and Alexander encounter alternate versions of other children of Starfleet legends, who show them they all may have a bit more in common than it would seem.

Conclusion
Overall, it was a rather simple panel for Paramount+ at NYCC 2023. There were no major reveals or announcements. However, given the current state of the media industry, this is not a surprise. The recent strikes have affected everyone, so it makes sense not to see anything major announced. Regardless, we’ve got some mini-updates on upcoming Star Trek and the rest of Lower Decks Season 4 to keep us busy!
