Finally, we’ve got our first real look at Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! The Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) gave us a look at the next part of the Star Trek franchise. Academy is a live-action series that focuses on the reopening of Starfleet Academy. It revolves around the first class of Starfleet cadets at the academy after 120 years. The new series marks the second Star Trek outing set in the 32nd Century, and is due to premiere ‘early 2026’.

Academy’s First Teaser Trailer
We’ve got our first look at the series thanks to a brand new teaser trailer! Jam-packed full of easter eggs, the action calls back to Star Trek‘s glory days. It also offers a hint that the young Cadets will be learning from the storied heroes of Starfleet’s past. We’ll be taking a closer look at all those hidden details later this week!
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.
Starfleet Academy Series Synopsis
The series stars Holly Hunter as Captain (and Chancellor) ‘Nahla Ake’. We’ve also got confirmed character names and species for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Gina Yashere will be a recurring guest star as ‘Commander Lura Throk’, a Klingon/Jem’Hadar hybrid who is the chancellor’s First Officer and Cadet Master. Plus, Paul Giamatti is playing the series villain, a little more on him below!
Reprising their roles are Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance, Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, and Robert Picardo as Voyager’s iconic Doctor. Plus, Zoë Steiner will play Tarima Sadal, a Betazoid and daughter of the president of Betazed.
And let’s not forget the new class of cadets! Karim Diané is Klingon ‘Jay-Den Kraag’, who dreams of becoming a medical officer. Bella Shepard is ‘Genesis Lythe’, a Dar-Sha, who is also an admiral’s daughter determined to make her own name in Starfleet. George Hawkins is ‘Darem Reymi’, a Khionian and an aspiring captain from a wealthy home world. Kerrice Brooks is Series Acclimation Mil, a.k.a. Sam, the first Kasquian to ever attend Starfleet Academy. Plus, Sandro Rosta is human ‘Caleb Mir’, an orphan with a troubled past — and unlikely Starfleet cadet.

A New Class of Cadets
Before the SDCC panel, Entertainment Weekly released new pictures for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. This article gave us brand new looks at both Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro – two characters who are reprising their roles from other Star Trek series. Picardo is, of course, from Star Trek: Voyager as The Doctor, and recently Star Trek: Prodigy. However, Notaro comes from a series closer to Academy, that being Star Trek: Discovery.
While we’ve got these first looks at characters from the series, details are under wraps. The creative team has not revealed too much about them just yet. However, we’ve done some digging and uncovered some details. For example, Gina Yashere’s character resembles a Jem’Hadar, but the uniform is adorned with Klingon emblems. Alex Kurtzman has confirmed that the show will feature Klingons. Indeed, Karim Diané will play a young Klingon Cadet Jay-Den Kraag.
The Showrunner explained that a “Klingon hybrid species” will be present. There are also apparently several of the main characters. Klingons were noticeably absent from Discovery’s final 32nd-century seasons. After a controversial reimagining of the species for Discovery’s first season was received with very mixed opinions.
Actor Paul Giamatti will play Starfleet Academy‘s main villain, ‘Nus Braka’ – a Klingon/Tellerite hybrid. Nus has an ominous past connected to one of our cadets. Plus, the score for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will also be composed by Jeff Russo, who has previously worked on Star Trek: Discovery and assisted in other Star Trek productions.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2
While we’ve got a fantastic look at Starfleet Academy Season One, it’s important to remember that the second season has already been ordered. Alex Kurtzman announced this in October 2024. Little is known about the development of the second season at the moment. However, it will likely contain the same main cast. Filming for Season 2 will run from August 27, 2025, to January 6, 2026.
A filming schedule for the second season was briefly mentioned earlier this year. Kurtzman commented in late January 2025 that there were only two weeks of production left for the first season. However, he also confirmed that filming for the second season would start by mid-year.
