It’s almost here! Nearly two years since the end of Season 2, we’re now hours away from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. Over the last few weeks, the Trek Central team have been sharing our thoughts on the crew’s journey so far. Last, and by no means least, is the legendary captain himself: Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). So, get ready to “hit it” as we explore Pike’s journey through Strange New Worlds Season 3!

Future Foretold
We start Season 1 with Christopher Pike on leave from the Enterprise. This is following the aftermath of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2. During this episode, he witnesses and experiences his death (or at least, the death of who he is now). With knowledge of that event (ten years from this point) haunting him, he’s lost his confidence. Pike believes a return to the big chair would leave him second-guessing every decision he makes. He’d be a liability and couldn’t trust himself; therefore, he couldn’t expect his crew to trust him either.
Enter Admiral Robert April (Adrian Holmes), who reaches out to Pike with a distress call from his number one, Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn). Unable to sit back while one of his crew was in danger, Pike accepts the mission. He pulls the Enterprise out of space dock early and sets course to save Una. By the end of Season 1 Episode 1, the Enterprise’s crew is together, and Pike’s confidence has (mostly) returned. They set off, continuing their mission to explore strange new worlds.
However, this isn’t the last time Pike’s future slips by to haunt him. This builds up to the Season 1 finale, when Pike encounters one of the cadets who dies in the same future incident as him. Pike decides to warn all the cadets to prevent such incidents in the future. In doing so, he creates a terrible alternate future that leaves the Federation war-torn and on the brink of collapse. Warned by his future self, he accepts his fate and decides not to warn the cadets. This returns the timeline to normal, and the Enterprise continues on its way into Season 2.

Captain, My Captain
Christopher Pike isn’t just about the captain’s chair. He makes a real effort with his crew, helping them to feel part of the family. He regularly gathers them for informal catch-ups and dinners, where he cooks the food from scratch. It creates a very warm, welcoming environment and stands Pike out as a captain who truly cares for his crew.
He also allows time for himself. We see from the start of Season 1 that he is romantically involved with another captain, Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano). Where the nature of their jobs keeps them apart for some time, they make a point of meeting whenever possible. This includes a joint mission between their two ships and (more awkwardly) the cliffhanger ending to Season 1. Batel boards the Enterprise and takes Chin-Riley into custody for lying about her species on her Starfleet application.
The pair manages to repair their relationship in the aftermath of Chin-Riley’s trial in Season 2. There’s a little of the typical relationship tension brought to bear during ‘Subspace Rhapsody’. Batel calls the Enterprise and ends up in a vulnerable duet with Pike, where he reveals how much he cares for her. A different kind of awkward this time, which La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong) interrupts to save the captain from further embarrassment. Cut to Season 2 finale ‘Hegemony’, and we have Pike emotionally compromised while Batel is being cryo-frozen. Will they be able to remove the Gorn growing inside Batel before they kill her?

What’s Next for Pike
We have several characters in Strange New Worlds with a certain amount of plot armour. Christopher Pike is certainly high up on that list. I expect Season 3 Episode 1 ‘Hegemony, Part 2’ will answer the question of Captain Batel’s fate. And we know from Paramount’s sneak peeks and clips that Pike and the crew survive the Gorn. So, what can we expect for the Enterprise’s captain through the rest of Season 3?
Based on recent reviews of the new season, Pike continues to keep the crew on point. He remains a consistent and compelling force, protecting and leading his people as he always has. However, it has been mentioned that he takes a more backseat role (at least across the five episodes that were released for review). This could be to give other characters time to shine. Or perhaps they’re starting to set up for another legendary captain to take the helm. We’ll need to watch to find out!
