Is There A New Enterprise In Star Trek: Picard?

-

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is coming to a close later this week. The whole series of Picard is with Episode 10, “The Last Generation”. However, Will there be A New Enterprise In Star Trek: Picard? The penultimate episode revealed Fleet Admiral Shelby commanding the Odyssey-class USS Enterprise-F. But we know that the ship is about to be decommissioned. Therefore, Starfleet and the Federation will not have another starship Enterprise. Oh, but thankfully the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D is back!

There is a subtle tease about a possible new Enterprise in Star Trek: Picard Season 3. For this, we look at the soundtrack of the third and final season. One track, titled “Name Means Everything”, could allude to a new starship Enterprise. However, this could also mean something like Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) taking his father’s name, Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart). But it is true, a starship’s name does mean everything. We’ve even seen that with this season’s “Hero Ship”, the USS Titan-A. Legacy is important, it seems.

A Soundtrack Tease

The ending to Star Trek: Picard is a big one. Not only is the actual episode an hour long but there is a lot of content. The season finale had to wrap up the plot and give a fitting conclusion to Star Trek: The Next Generation once and for all. However, part of me wonders if A New Enterprise In Star Trek: Picard is being teased. With the Enterprise-F being decommissioned and the Enterprise-D back up and about, there are a few potential outcomes here.

There is a subtle tease in the soundtrack of Star Trek: Picard Season 3. Previously, the soundtracks to the series have given away big reveals. For example, Trek Central correctly guessed that Wil Wheaton would return as Wesley Crusher, aka The Traveller, in the second season finale. So, it’s not impossible to make a guess about this soundtrack. The track “Name Means Everything” is the key. It could be about Jack Crusher or A New Enterprise In Star Trek: Picard.

I hope this is the case anyway. It would be a fitting way for Star Trek: Picard to “pass the baton” to The Next Generation—something we know will happen. Given Season 3 seems to be taking inspiration from the past, perhaps the next Enterprise will? Bill Krause has contributed several designs to the third season. Perhaps another of his, like the USS Endurance, could be a base template for a future Enterprise? The drive section certainly gives Galaxy-class vibes.

The Downfall Of The Enterprise-F

I’ve waited years for the Odyssey-class USS Enterpsie-F to appear since the ship was teased in the prequel comic Star Trek: Picard Countdown. In that comic, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard commanded the USS Verity. This confirmed that Odyssey-class starships were much longer active before Star Trek: Online introduced them. Of course, the ship class was actually introduced in that video game. Cryptic Studios, the developer, held a fan contest to “Design the Next Enterprise”.

The USS Enterprise-F finally made its first on-screen appearance in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Episode 9 “Vox”. Before that, it had appeared on screens and in trailers for the third and final season. However, the series has made it clear that the Enterrpise-F is on its way out the door. The ship is being decommissioned in the series due to major issues. It seems the ship suffered major damage while on a mission. According to Star Trek Logs, the Enterprise-F did what the ships do best—saving lives.

Enterprise-F’s critical systems were severely compromised during the “Monfette Gambit”. This likely references Christopher Monfette, one of Star Trek: Picard’s writers. The logs state the in-universe event was a rescue effort for Raillian refugees on Fenton IV. it’s a shame to see the ship being pushed aside so early. However, I wonder if this is because the showrunner and creative want their own USS Enterprise. Introducing a new hero ship is one way to end a series. It will leave a mark for sure.

The Legacy of The Enterprise-D

Regardless of getting A New Enterprise In Star Trek: Picard or not, we have one legend return. Season 3 Episode 9, “Vox”, gave us the return of the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise-D. Once thought destroyed in Star Trek: Generations, the ship is back in working form. It seems Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) has been working to rebuild the ship over the past 20 years or so. Does he ever sleep? However, Star Trek: Picard has dropped hints about the Enterrpise-D return. Even Season 2 confirmed the saucer section was salvaged.

Now, how the ship will fair in the upcoming episode, we have no idea. In all honesty, it could get nuked in the first 5 minutes. Realistically that would probably happen. Imagine taking a 30-year-old starship against a whole armada. Thankfully, this is entertainment, and we have plot on our side. There could easily be a sequence where the Enterprise-D is upgraded and renamed Enterprise-G. It would be rather a cliche, but it’s a fun way to do it. It would tie into the soundtrack tease as well!

Conclusion

So, will we see A New Enterprise In Star Trek: Picard? Who knows! But ending the series with the launch of the USS Enterprise-G would be a way to lead into “Star Trek: Legacy“. It remains unknown at the time of writing if any more 25th-century stories are to be told. I, for one, hope this is the case. Star Trek is in its prime in this era. There are so many characters and ships to play with. Star Trek: Picard Season 3 has proven this. We’ve got our beloved Enterprise-D back. Shame about the Enterprise-E, I guess?

Hopefully, if A New Enterprise In Star Trek: Picard is introduced, then I wish for it to be a new starship. While Star Trek: Picard has made a point of respecting the past and how legacy is good, we need to charge forward. This is what Star Trek is about, going forward and seeing the unknown. As I mentioned, if the plan is to rename a ship already existing, like the Enterprise-D or another ship we’ve seen, then, I think the idea will fall flat on its face in my personal opinion. We shall have to wait and see!

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 airs on Thursdays via Paramount+ for those in the United States. Additionally, on Crave and the CTV Sci-Fi channel for viewers in Canada. However, new episodes air Fridays via Amazon Prime Video in international regions like the United Kingdom. Paramount+ also streams the episodes in select locations, such as Italy, Germany and France.
