PREVIEW – Star Trek: Strange New World’s HORROR Episode!

-

Ready to be jump scared? Hopefully, that is not the case! This week we’ve got a first look at Star Trek: Strange New World’s HORROR Episode! Trailers, clips and promotional pictures show us what Captain Pike (Anson Mount) finds himself in. Additionally, we’re finally seeing the crashed Constitution-class starship that was first seen in the trailers months ago. However, is it a ship we know?

Star Trek and the horror genre are two you don’t typically put together. However, the franchise has ventured there in some episodes before. I stand by my point that Deep Space Nine’s “Empok Nor”, is one of Trek’s best horror episodes. While not actually an episode, more of a horror movie in miniature. Hopefully Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is going to give viewers a taste of this in Episode 9 “All Those Who Wander“.

Promotional Pictures!

Take a look at these promotional pictures. Nurse Chapel can be seen checking up on an unknown Alien whose species we are unaware of at this point in time. Perhaps this person is the castaways that the captain mentioned. Additional pictures feature a bunch of action shots of the crew moving through ship corridors and such.

Teaser Trailer

As revealed by the teaser trailer, the crashed Constitution-class starship is called the “USS Peregrine” and it’s sent a distress call. However, pause the trailer quickly on the opening, you’ll actually see TWO starships. Does this mean we’re getting more starships? Or as the trailer just told us the crashed ship is going to get rescued? Additionally, do we know who is commanding the starship?

The distress call features what sounds like a female Captain. Might this be Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano)? Fortunately is not! Pike’s girlfriend, as revealed in the opening episode, is actually commanding another starship right now. She’s actually commanding the USS Cayuga, as revealed by Timothy Peel. Shame, but probably for the best, as judging by the teaser, the crew of the Peregrine have met a gruesome fate.

Look, I think based on the teaser trailer it is safe to presume The Gorn are back. While the idea of people being picked apart sounds familiar, there is another clue. Listen closely to the trailer and you’ll hear alien sounds, some similar to that of “Memento Mori”. Additionally, thanks to IMDB, we know actor Cameron Roberts will appear again as Manu Noonien-Singh. La’an’s (Christina Chong) brother was featured in Memento Mori during flashback segments.

Strange New Worlds Ready Room Clip

The clip from Star Trek: Strange New World’s HORROR Episode focuses on Mr Spock. It would seem he is venturing off by himself to explore the starship. However, does he find something that gives us a clue? While venturing into another compartment, there is a small hull breach. However, if you look closely, does that look like reptile skin stuck on the plating? Trekkies have drawn this conclusion. Who do we know has skin like that…

We’ve got to commend the set designers for this week’s episode. Obviously, this is a redress of the USS Enterprise set. However, making it look heavily damaged, dimly lit and blood smeared on the floors really reinforces this horror vibe. Strange New Worlds really knows how to make use of what it already has.

Thanks to the editors for that unwanted jump scare sound effect. I’m of course talking about the moment Captain Pike grabs Mr Spock’s shoulder. This spooks both the viewer and Spock it would seem. However, based on the teaser trailer and this moment, perhaps we’re seeing something else going on. Star Trek: Strange New World’s HORROR Episode is bound to challenge the crew in more ways than one.

Conclusion

Oh, did I mention that Samuel Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) is back in this episode? Pause at 0:16 in the teaser trailer and you’ll catch a glimpse of the Lieutenant. Hopefully, he does not get into any accidents this time around. The last time we properly saw him he touched that egg-looking thing and got struck down.

The last time the Enterprise crew encountered The Gorn, they barely escaped it would seem. However, since then, you could argue the crew have become more experienced. Essentially being more sure of themselves. However again, this time they might be facing The Gorn in hand-to-hand combat, rather than space ships. It really depends if The Gorn are the enemy in this episode. Additionally, we do have a glimpse of a teaser for this.

Take a look below, this glimpse of what could be a “Baby Gorn”, has appeared in teaser trailers for Strange New Worlds before. However, we still have not seen this in an episode. Given the nature of the upcoming episode, might Star Trek: Strange New World’s HORROR Episode feature it? Star Trek creatives have teased more Gorn as well. So maybe.
