It’s finally here! Fresh from the Star Trek Universe panel of New York Comic Con (NYCC) 2025. The panel not only announced that the show will premiere on Thursday, 15th January 2026. They also revealed the official trailer for Season 1 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! So, get ready to enlist as we warp headfirst into the highlights of this trailer.
An Unhinged Mentorship
This Starfleet Academy trailer appears to set the A-plot up nicely. As a child, Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) is separated from his mother, essentially orphaned (as his father doesn’t appear to be around). It’s suggested that mysterious series villain Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) has something to do with his mother’s disappearance. He taunts the young Caleb to remember how much he hates the antagonist, as Braka is dragged away by a neck restraint. We see Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) yelling to “find him” before the trailer jumps to the ‘present day’ 32nd Century.
This is where, fifteen years after the initial scenes, Ake finally finds Caleb. She takes him under her wing, encouraging him to join Starfleet. The Captain promises that, in doing so, they can find Caleb’s mother together.

“Why does everything need to be a full-on lesson in this place?”
Caleb (Sandro Rosta) in the official Star Trek: Starfleet Academy trailer.
Remaining scenes of the two characters dotted throughout the trailer reveal a slightly unhinged mentor-mentee relationship. Captain Ake shows traits similar to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Pelia (Carol Kane). This whackier, almost eccentric personality is not surprising, as we already know Ake is half-Lanthanite, so she shares a similar heritage to Pelia. It’s clear that Caleb takes to Ake despite (or perhaps due to) Ake’s personality. The pair are seen later in the trailer laughing and joking together. It will be interesting to see how this relationship develops through the course of the series.
Character Connections

It’s clear that connection with those around us will form an important theme throughout the series. The trailer highlights several relationships that could become important points in both plot and character development. We also see more generic shots of camaraderie amongst the cadets during their time at Starfleet Academy.
Many of these connections relate to what we’d expect to see on a college or university campus today. Romance is key amongst these (of course it is, we’re talking about a group of hormonal teens!). The trailer highlights some intimate moments between Caleb and Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner), a Betazoid cadet. Where these are expected, we see quite a bit of it in the trailer (maybe too much?). We’ll have to wait and see if the show strikes the right balance between romance and Trek themes.
“Sometimes I feel invisible. But mostly, awkward.”
Sam (Kerrice Brooks) in the official Star Trek: Starfleet Academy trailer.
Another notable relationship we see in the trailer is between The Doctor (Robert Picardo) and Sam (Kerrice Brooks). The pair is walking through the campus on what might be Orientation Day, based on a sign behind them. Sam is confiding in The Doctor about the difficulties she faces when in social situations. This is something relatable to many viewers, especially those in college and university settings. There’s clearly a lot of trust between the two already, despite the scene potentially being from an early episode.
Athena: Campus & Ship

Something else that receives a good spotlight in this latest Starfleet Academy trailer is the campus itself – the USS Athena. We’ve seen glimpses of it before in photos and the First Look trailer from San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year.
But the ship finally shines in all its beauty at the very start of this trailer. It fades into view, docked at the traditional Starfleet Academy campus we’ve known for nearly sixty years. Looking across the water past the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco beyond. It’s incredible to think that, over a thousand years from now, our cities and landscapes could still stand tall.
We get to see the Athena’s exterior twice more during the trailer. Once Caleb and Ake are approaching it (Caleb for the first time), and again under attack from an unidentified enemy. We also get some stunning bridge views, looking as sleek and hi-tech as you would expect from the 32nd Century. It is red, silver, and gold accents, combined with the perfectly positioned narrow light strips give the command centre some extra character. It’ll be great to see what the Athena is capable of when the series airs.
Some Heart Warming Nostalgia

What would modern Star Trek be without a little nostalgia from previous shows? We’ve seen several easter eggs dotted about in the First Look trailer earlier this year. We also have some returning characters from Star Trek shows, both modern and more… classic.
First up is the legendary Emergency Medical Hologram, who surpassed his programming and challenged the core philosophical beliefs of his time. We first met The Doctor on January 16th, 1995, in the Star Trek: Voyager premiere episode ‘Caretaker’. He quickly became a fan-favourite character. So, news of Robert Picardo reprising his role for Starfleet Academy has been enthusiastically received by many fans. And seeing The Doctor back on screen in this latest trailer is exciting to be sure, though as yet we’ve not heard him speaking. Here’s hoping we’ll see a lot of him throughout the show!
“Being a cadet in Starfleet Academy means being open to the people around you.”
Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) in the official Star Trek: Starfleet Academy trailer
Starfleet Academy is also welcoming back some alumni from Star Trek: Discovery. This latest trailer gives us a new look at Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), giving the cadets an inspiring speech about connection. We get a first look at Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), though many fans have been disappointed to hear she may only be appearing for one episode. We’re also expecting the return of Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr), who appeared briefly in the First Look trailer. Unfortunately, there’s no sign of him in this latest trailer, but I look forward to seeing him return to our screens!
Be A Part Of It

This has been a great official trailer, setting the tone for the show’s premiere. And we don’t have long to wait, with the premiere episode airing on Thursday, 15th January 2026, on Paramount+.
“It’s time for you to stop telling the story. Be a part of it.”
Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) in the official Star Trek: Starfleet Academy trailer.
