Pride Month celebrations continue all throughout June worldwide with a special commemoration on June 28 to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Hidden within the parades and fanfare, savvy Star Trek fans can find a core Vulcan philosophy and, through it, a deep connection to LGBTQ+ communities. Trek Central is celebrating Pride with the Star Trek Universe!
As fans of Star Trek may know, IDIC stands for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. This Vulcan philosophy pushes the idea that, like the infinite nature of space, love, gender, and sexuality come in all forms without limits. This knowledge, as Spock might say, is only logical.

The symbol of IDIC first appeared in the third season of the Original Series in the episode, “Is There in Truth No Beauty?” Gene Roddenberry designed the symbol Spock wears in the episode, and fans today can still be seen wearing replicas of it at conventions to symbolize not only Star Trek but also IDIC. The Roddenberry Foundation recently hosted a live virtual event Creating a Star Trek Future in Times of Crisis that focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the franchise and beyond where IDIC was discussed.
“Is There in Truth No Beauty?” first aired in 1968, and the Stonewall Uprising occurred in 1969. The 1960s were a time of social change, and Star Trek documents much of the excitement of the time with cultural breakthroughs including the first interracial kiss on TV (“Plato’s Stepchildren”) and heavy allegorical episodes that denounce Nazism and racism (“Patterns of Force” and “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield”).
Never one to shy away from important topics, Star Trek projects a potential future where people of all genders and sexualities can be valued all year long.
