Star Trek: Omega marks the end of an era! The denouement of over two years of storytelling, bridging the gap between Star Trek: Insurrection and Nemesis. Featuring series Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant, crossover events Day of Blood and Lore War, miniseries Sons of Star Trek, and one-shots like Shaxs’ Best Day, it’s been a hell of a ride.
It all started with Sisko returning from the wormhole and picking up a crew of fan favourite characters, and grew into perhaps the best era of Star Trek comics ever. The two main crews led by Worf and Sisko have battled gods, Klingon Emperors, the Tzenkethi, parasitic aliens, Romulan elements, and most recently saved the universe from being rewritten by Lore. Now the story’s over, it’s time to see the resolution.
WARNING – Spoilers below for Star Trek: Omega

Looking Forward
Omega isn’t a contained story as much as it is a series of vignettes, touching on all the characters’ stories. In terms of sheer quantity, it can be disorienting, especially with the amount of different artists on hand. Although the writing team know which characters to focus on, lending emotional weight to the stories to those that matter.
Worf, as the lead character of Defiant, is given a lot of time. Nearly buried by Admirals Jellico and Nechayev, he’s saved by a last-minute intervention from Picard. Meanwhile, the rest of the Next Generation characters prepare to return to the Enterprise and attend Riker’s wedding. It’s a routine but necessary setup for Star Trek: Nemesis, serviceably setting pieces into place.
The real impact and surprise is how Omega treats its original characters, or those whose fates are more open. Choices like letting Nymira run away with the Defiant, and adopting Lily into the Fenris Rangers both give them a place in the wider universe. They’re also natural extensions of the characters’ journeys, fighting the good fight without the need of a combadge.

Farewell
For some characters, this story is very much a goodbye. Scotty retires and goes to visit Uhura, which was nothing short of heartwarming. As a man out of time, it’s nice to see him find a sense of home outside of Engineering. Perhaps it’s the Original Series fan in me, but it was easily my favourite part of this whole one-shot. It’s evident that the creatives understood the emotional weight of the scene, executing it brilliantly.
There’s a lot to be said for the way this story has handled Sisko. His triumphant return from the wormhole, fighting gods, it’s every Deep Space Nine fan’s dream. However, it also afforded him the opportunity to be be a father again, with the quiet family moments being brilliant. His final farewell to Jake mirrors the final shot of “What You Leave Behind”, albeit with a heavier emotional weight behind it.
Across these comics, we’ve had stories of love, rebellion, redemption, humility, and finding yourself. All under the guise of picking up on characters and plot threads that Trek fans have wanted for decades. Ultimately, this is the end that Sisko has always needed, both Ben and Jake. This is a story that feels necessary, timely, and it’s been an honour to be along for the ride.

Conclusion
The flurry of goodbyes here can be overwhelming, the jump from one vignette to the next at times jarring. However, I find it hard to say that any of these farewells are unearned or unwelcome. Each and every emotional beat lands, closing out the story nicely. There’s no big twist here, just a celebration of the story and all of the characters that were along for the ride.
The end result is a satisfying and emotional sendoff to what is perhaps one of the best Star Trek stories of all time. As a fan, as someone who spent a not insignificant amount of time covering this story, I walk away satisfied. While this is the end of a story, it’s not the end of Star Trek comics at all. There’s a lot to look forward to, such as Defiant writer Christopher Cantwell’s Red-Shirts, which looks to be an absolute slaughter-fest!
