It’s been a long road getting from there to her, but ‘Star Trek: Section 31’ starring Michelle Yeoh is now filming! First being announced in 2019 as a series, it has now changed to a movie! The film will be directed by Star Trek: Discovery veteran Olatunde Osunsanmi. The movie is written by Craig Sweeny. This announcement has also come with casting for the movie.
We’ve gotten some more recent news about filming in the Kelvin universe with a prequel project by Andor director Toby Haynes. However, it looks like this project will be coming out first. But what do we know about this Section 31 original movie event?
Official Description
Along with this announcement of filming, we have gotten an official description of the movie:
This is a very vague description, and though the first half doesn’t give us much. This simply describes Star Trek: Section 31, a secretive agency protecting the United Federation of Planets first established in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. However, the second part of this description gives us so idea about what we might see in this movie.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 established more backstory for the former Terran Emperor. San was someone from the Mirror Universe who Georgiou cared about but unfortunately was killed. Georgiou says that he was someone who might have influenced her for the better, so we could see more about who San was and what his importance to Georgiou might be.
Casting!
Along with a description we also got some cast announced for this movie! Alongside Michelle Yeoh we have Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia) and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).
Unfortunately, we didn’t get any character descriptions for this new cast, so whether some of them are Star Trek: Section 31 officers or members of Starfleet we don’t know. This may have given away some plot details, especially when even the time this film is set is not known.
Comments
Alex Kurtzman, current head of the Star Trek Universe had this to say on the filming:
Again there is not much to be gleaned from this comment, though I am sure it is a relief to see this project finally starting filming after so long. It takes a while to get some projects off the ground. Could we see more Original Movie event projects after Section 31? Could Legacy start as a direct-to-streaming movie? Or will our next movie finally be Star Trek 4 or the Star Trek (2009) prequel? We’ll have to keep watching to find out!
Conclusion
It has been a long time since the Section 31 project was first announced nearly 5 years ago.
Though the project is now starting filming, we don’t have an idea when Star Trek: Section 31 might be released. As an original movie event, it will be a direct-to-streaming movie, coming to Paramount+ in the US and in all international markets where the service is available. The movie is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
