Star Trek: Strange New Worlds To End With Season 5

-

Ahead of the upcoming third season, Paramount+ has announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with a fifth and final season. Trek Central first reported that season 5 of the series was on the cards earlier this week. However, this Thursday, Paramount+ confirmed that Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fifth and final season. While disappointing news to the Star Trek fandom, it is not surprising.

Season 3 of Anson Mount’s Captain Pike adventures arrives on July 17th. However, while the third and upcoming fourth seasons will feature 10 Episodes, the fifth and final season has been reduced to only six episodes. No reason has been given for this decision at the moment. It’s worth noting that other Paramount+ Star Trek series have not made it past Season 5. For example, both Star Trek: Discovery and the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks have ended at a fifth season.

A Message from Strange New Worlds Exec Producers

As Trekkies, we’ve always known where Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is heading. It eventually has to end to put Captain James T Kirk (Paul Wesley) into the USS Enterprise command chair. However, many did not rightfully expect it to happen so quickly. As a series, Strange New Worlds has not been shy about building up to The Original Series. Season 3 will see actor Martin Quinn join the main cast as Engineer Montgomery Scott.

Executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman have released a joint statement about the end of Strange New Worlds.

How the series will conclude the story remains to be seen. It’s bizarre to see a reduced episode count. Even Star Trek: Discovery, which ended with a fifth season, got its 10 episodes. However, this is different for Strange New Worlds. Only six episodes leave little room for error in wrapping up the story of Pike’s USS Enterprise. Will we see it handed over to Captain Kirk? Will we see Pike’s accident? There are a lot of questions at the moment.

Onwards and Upwards

We’re certainly at an interesting point in this era of the Star Trek Universe. With most of the recent shows finished, cancelled or swept under the rug, it’s easy to think things are a bit glum. Still, we have the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series coming in the future. There are whispers about a Janeway series with Kate Mulgrew, and who knows what the future holds. However, let’s be honest, it is not easy being a Star Trek fan at the moment.

Whatever happens, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 won’t arrive for some time. Season 3 airs on July 17th via Paramount+, and Season 4 is currently in production. We’ll be waiting some time before we see the fourth season, so season 5 is way off into the final frontier.
