Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Wraps on Season 1

-

The latest live-action series of the Star Trek Universe, Starfleet Academy, has wrapped its first season! The cast & crew took to social media to celebrate the end of months of filming! The latest series to join the franchise will feature a cast of new young talent and some familiar faces. But while filming comes to an end, don’t expect the series to premiere any time soon. Paramount+ has not confirmed when the series will air. Trekkies remain in anticipation of the next big Star Trek outing.

That’s a wrap!

Filming began on Starfleet Academy in August last year at Pinewood Toronto. The studios recently renamed one of its sound stages to the ‘Star Trek Stage’, honoring Star Trek: Discovery. All five seasons of the series, which kicked off a new era of Trek, were filmed at Pinewood. Production has now built the biggest set ever used in Star Trek, which is in Discovery‘s old home stages for the series.

Academy will feature a large cast of young talent, some in their first major roles! And it is clear they’re all eager and excited for fans to see the show. In traditional fashion, the cast & crew are celebrating the end of months of filming with a wrap party! And have been sharing snaps from the festivities.

Bella Shepard, who will play a Starfleet cadet, posted to show off her new Academy varsity-style jacket. The post’s caption noted “Wow oh wow!! Season one of Starfleet Academy has wrapped!!! Thank you universe, thank you stars for this insane journey and all of the people I shared this with💫”

A New Generation

The series will also feature Kerrice Brooks, George HawkinsKarim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta as cadets. Plus, Star Trek: Discovery favorites are making the jump to the new series to help guide a new generation of Starfleet officers. Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Oded Fehr (Admiral Vance), and Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), plus Star Trek: Voyager & Prodigy alumni Robert Picardo (EMH) will return to the Star Trek Universe

The series will be led by Academy Award winner Holly Hunter, as the Academy’s Captain and Chancellor. Gina Yashere will play a Starfleet Academy instructor, and the most recently announced Tatiana Maslany will guest-star in a recurring role. And the great Paul Giamatti is teased as the series ‘villain’!

Set in the 32nd Century, Academy follows Star Trek: Discovery‘s re-establishment of the institution. The official description is as follows:

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Development of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

The first mention of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as a series in development was broken by Deadline in February 2022. Paramount+ then announced the series officially in March 2023. Major casting news followed, with Holly Hunter joining the series as its Captain and the Starfleet Academy chancellor. Hunter will be the first Academy Award winner to helm a Star Trek series. Paul Giamatti’s casting news followed not long after, and will play the main villain, who is “someone with a dark past and connected to a cadet”.

Towards the end of 2024, with New York Comic Con, we learned that several Star Trek characters would return for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Tig Notaro and Robert Picardo will be reprising their respective roles of Jett Reno from Discovery and the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager. Mary Wiseman will also return as Tilly in a guest role alongside Discovery’s Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance.

Our latest casting was the surprise reveal of Becky Lynch. She confirmed her casting in December 2024, and teased her role as ‘a member of a Starfleet Bridge Crew’ in the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Warp Speed To Star Trek: Starfleet Academy!

Now that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has finished filming, it will warp into full post-production. We’ll likely start hearing bits and pieces about the new Star Trek adventure throughout 2025. However, we do not know if the series will air in 2025 as it was previously slated for 2026. Paramount+ has not revealed much about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy while it is in early production. We do know it will consist of 10 episodes, as is the norm with the modern Star Trek series. A second Season has already been ordered and is currently in development.
