Star Trek Coffee Beams Down! – Pop Culture Coffee Review

-

Pop Culture Coffee has embarked on a bold mission to develop Star Trek-themed coffee blends. A total of 6 blends have been assembled to accommodate every taste, whether you are an ensign or an admiral. Trek Central has had the privilege of sampling these blends, before being released in mid-December.

The six blends take fans to the final frontier and back: Captain’s Choice, Vulcan Vanilla, Federation Roast, Coffee Black (Janeway), Borg Blend, and, of course, Raktajino (Klingon coffee).

Let’s get brewing!

Coffee, Black!

It seems only fitting to start with Captain Kathryn Janeway’s (Kate Mulgrew) choice blend. A true bean lover, coffee helped her guide Voyager across 70,000 light years. She even beat the Borg with it!

As one would expect, this blend is a full-bodied dark roast. With the first whiff upon opening the coffee sack, you expect this to keep you sharp. Many dark roasts pack a punch of flavor with the expense of a bitter aftertaste. Surprisingly, this blend not only gives a robust flavor with every sip but maintains a silky smoothness from start to finish.

“There’s Coffee in that Nebula!”

– Capt. Kathryn JAneway (KAte Mulgrew)

Well sadly, there wasn’t. But we can definitely understand why the good Captain used extra replicator rations for this blend. It is sure to counter the Monday blues and leave a warm smile on your face. This blend should definitely set a course, for your home!

Resistance is Futile

Priority One Message, from Starfleet Command to all Captains: The Borg has developed a new method for assimilation….coffee. This highly addictive blend is pleasantly sweet. One sip, and you’ll lower your defenses making you ripe for assimilation.

The aroma from this Toffee Crunch blend filled the senses upon opening the shipping box from Pop Culture Coffee. The taste did not disappoint. Its sweet smoothness simply melts the soul. Sitting on a Borg cube with a cup suddenly doesn’t seem so bad, after all. Whether starting your day off on a relaxed note or wanting to enjoy a sweet and smooth dessert blend – the collective has your back (and your technological distinctiveness)!

Today is a Good Day…for Raktajino!

The wide pallet of a Klingon is such a unique thing – Bloodwine, Gagh, Rokeg blood pie, Racht, Prune juice – and Butterscotch! This blend will ignite your warrior’s heart with its hearty dark roast. It is arguably darker than Captain Janeway’s blend and complimented by its moderately strong butterscotch notes.

After six months, I was hoping the Klingons would invade… at least they know how to make coffee, even if they are foul-smelling barbarians.

– Arne Darvin (Charlie Brill)

This blend keeps the silky smooth promise which has been consistent through all blends. The butterscotch flavor is not overpowering. We found this blend to make a wonderful Affogato in the absence of espresso. Whether preparing for battle or practicing with your Bat’leth, this Raktajino will keep you sharp and strong! Qapla!

The Elixir of Admirals

Whether you’re a first-year cadet, or a fleet admiral sipping coffee in a scenic office – Federation Roast reminds you why there’s no place like Earth! This macadamia nut blend is so smooth, it should be criminal. Delivering that perfect first sip in the morning, you’ll feel as if you could run Starfleet for yet another day!

The Classic Duo

The final two blends being released by Pop Culture Coffee take us back to the beginning where it all started. Captain’s Choice and Vulcan Vanilla will surely be among your go-to daily roasts.

Vulcan Vanilla is remarkably, dare we say, passionate – especially for such a cold, and emotionally suppressed race. Its moderate notes of vanilla will not leave you feeling very logical. Unlike other vanilla-flavored coffees that are common, this blend’s vanilla does not taste artificial. There are hints of toasted almond mixed in as well, making this a great blend to enjoy on a cold evening.

Captain’s Choice wraps up the collection, as a plain medium roast coffee with notes of cocoa, toffee, and caramel. This is truly a great everyday blend that offers the same non-acidic smoothness as every other blend. It is no wonder why Kirk was upset when a Tribble replaced his coffee!

Star Trek Coffees – The Original Blends

One Step Closer to the Final Frontier

All six blends will conquer your coffee pot and transport you to the future. Pop Culture is set to release them in mid-December, and each bag sells for USD 16.99 (plus taxes). Gift sets will also be available featuring hand-thrown limited edition coffee mugs. Their designs will be coordinated with the bundled blends – Federation Roast, Raktajino, and Coffee, Black. These will retail for USD 55.99.

Being completely unbiased to the Star Trek theme, we found Pop Culture Coffee to make excellent silky smooth roasts. This high-quality coffee has quickly become a favourite and will make great holiday gifts!
