NEW Star Trek Movie by ‘ANDOR’ Director!

-

After numerous attempts to try and get a new Star Trek movie off the ground, the latest attempt comes from Star Wars tv series “Andor” Director Toby Haynes! We’ve had a lot of tries for a new Trek movie from Fargo’s Noah Hawley, Star Trek: Discovery‘s Kalinda Vasquez, Matt Shakman, and even Quentin Tarantino!

Will this be the attempt that finally brings Star Trek back to the theatres? We do have the Special Movie Event Star Trek: Section 31 with Michelle Yeoh and though we are excited for that, it will be a direct to streaming movie. So what have we been told about this new Star Trek movie?

Creative Team

The creative team behind this new movie are Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of the Star Wars series “Andor”. Incidentally, Toby Haynes also directed the Star Trek spoof episode of Black Mirror “USS Callister”. This would mean that not only does he have experiencing directing sci-fi, but also Star Trek-like material. Seth Grahame-Smith will be writing the movie, known for writing “The Lego Batman movie”.

JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot production studio will produce the movie. Abrams directed Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness, the first two movies out of three in the Kelvin timeline. The studio is describing this new movie as an expansion of its Trek universe.

Story?

While plot details haven’t been shared, we do have an understanding of when the movie will take place decades before the original 2009 Star Trek film. This is very confusing, as the 2009 star trek film takes place across multiple years, and multiple timelines. This might mean decades before the main events of the movie. The main events of 2009 take place in the Kelvin Timeline in 2255. However the Kelvin timeline only started in 2233. So if this takes place anytime before 2233, it would be canonical to both the Kelvin and Prime timeline.

The other option is that it takes place decades before the events of the movie in the prime timeline, in 2387. An option this movie has is to tie into the backstory of Star Trek: Picard, and possibly even explain why the Romulan Sun went supernova in the first place! I doubt this will be the case, as it will probably be set in the Kelvin Timeline, sometime after the Narada destroys the U.S.S. Kelvin.

Timeline Issues

However if the movie takes place before the events of 2233 and the destruction of the Kelvin, this wouldn’t be the first time the Kelvin movies have done this. Star Trek: beyond featured the U.S.S. Franklin, a Starfleet ship from the time of Star Trek: Enterprise. Obviously though, if the whole movie was set before the Kelvin, this would be our first prime timeline movie since Star Trek: Nemesis!

Whatever the case may be, as a timeline nerd I very much look forward to learning when exactly this movie may take place. Though whether we need an origin story for Star Trek 2009 or not is debatable, considering the movie itself is an origin story of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Star Trek 4 still happening?

However this movie may not be Star Trek 4, and may be a separate project from the continuing mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. According to the Deadline article, “Insiders go on to add the final chapter in the main series, Star Trek 4 remains in active development”. This gives us a lot of new information. This movie is technically a spin-off of the Kelvin Timeline movies.

We also get the added info of “The Final Chapter in the main series”. Star Trek 4 seems to now be the final mission of our Kelvin U.S.S. Enterprise crew! Star Trek: Beyond, gave us a great note to end off of. But with the U.S.S. Enterprise-A being constructed at the end, could we have one final true cast-off for the crew that brought Star Trek back? With it being in active development, we’ll have to keep our eyes open. But it looks like before that happens, we will have a different adventure with this new Star Trek 2009 prequel!
