As Star Trek: Lower Decks reaches its fifth and final season we wanted to take a look at some of our favorite friends and foes of the USS Cerritos! We’ve met many characters over the past four seasons. So this list is by no means definitive. Some, however, have definitely left their mark on the show and fandom. I’m sure there’s more on the way in Lower Decks’ Firth and Final season premiering in just 6 days (October 24)!
The Pakleds and Captain William T. Riker
Our first memorable of the many friends and foes didn’t take long to arrive. The finale of season 1 opened with the shocking destruction of the USS Solvang at the hands of the Pakleds, who had become a powerful threat to the Federation.
When the USS Cerritos responds to the Solvang’s distress call and falls victim to multiple Pakled ships, all looks lost. That is until Captain William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and the U.S.S. Titan come to the rescue in spectacular fashion. It turns out that not only does Riker know Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) but he was a mentor to Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) too.
Badgey, Goodgey, and Logicky!
A simple training program that developed murderous psychopathic tendencies with daddy issues. This is a sentence you could only read in a Lower Decks article right? He’s definitely up there with one of Trek’s most unhinged friends and foes!
Originally designed by Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) to help D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) practice zero-g training. The ensigns ended up fighting for their lives after Badgey (Jack McBrayer) sought revenge on his ‘father’. This would escalate further at the conclusion of season 2, with a fleet of Badgey-controlled automated ships attempting to seek revenge.
Badgey returns once more in season 4 after the Drookmani recover Rutherford’s implant from the season 1 finale and become subjugated by the murderous AI. By choosing peace over conflict, Rutherford confuses Badgey’s program which splits into 3 separate personalities – Badgey, Goodgey, and Logicky. It looks like the universe is over when Badgey spreads his program over the entire galaxy in season 4 but after seeing the beauty of it all, understands the pointlessness of violence.
With Badgey ascending to an empty dimension to start a new existence and Logicky biting the dust, will we see Goodgey again? We’ll surely be watching him with eagle eyes for the slightest hint of megalomania.
While there’s not much Star Trek Lower Decks merch out there, Master Replicas has delivered for the Badgey fans with his very own plushie!
William Boimler
In the early episodes of season 2, Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) is duplicated in a transporter accident aboard the Titan. Initially not amused with the situation, the twins appear to begin to bond. This bond is short-lived, however, as Riker confirms one of them has to return to the Cerritos as an Ensign. The twins smile and nod at each other before our Boimler steps forward, expecting his twin to do the same. He does not, and the newly christened William Boimler betrays his twin to remain on the Titan. Dejected, Brad slinks back to the Cerritos, but not before receiving a touching send-off from his fellow away team crew.
In season 3 William is seemingly killed off after a neurocene gas leak aboard the Titan. We later learn Section 31 covertly recruited William and faked his death. Will we see William return in season 5 or will this sub-plot remain unresolved?
The Moopsy
Not to be confused with a Pokémon, the Moopsy is a predatory animal known for drinking the bones of its victims whilst adorably saying its own name. Moopsy rampaged around Narj’s Miraculous Menagerium during season 4 episode 2, devouring everything it could sink its teeth into. It was eventually recaptured by Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell) and Lieutenant Mariner.
The Moopsy has already spawned into a real-life plushie we absolutely ADORE! This little bone chugger is irresistible, but thank god it’s not a real animal because we’d been doomed!
Peanut Hamper and AGIMUS
Starfleet ensign and Exocomp Peanut Hamper (Kether Donohue) joined Starfleet to “p*** off” her parents. Peanut Hamper could have been the virus delivery method to save the Cerritos from the Pakleds, but instead abandoned the ship and crew to its fate. Not very Starfleet!
We meet AGIMUS (Jeffrey Combs) shortly after these events, in season 2. He’s your typical run-of-the-mill evil sentient computer, with murder drones! Played delightfully by Combs, he fails to escape at the hands of Mariner and Boimler and is imprisoned by Starfleet at the Daystrom Institute.
Meanwhile, Peanut Hamper is also captured by Starfleet in season 3’s ‘A Mathematically Perfect Redemption‘ and imprisoned alongside AGIMUS. It’s revealed in ‘A Few Badgeys More‘ that Peanut Hamper and AGIMUS have become close friends. After lying to her friend about wanting to subjugate planets together, Peanut Hamper gains parole and returns to her family instead. In an interesting twist, it turns out AGIMUS didn’t want to dominate planets anymore and just wanted to spend time with his friend instead.
With AGIMUS returning to prison but working towards being more peaceful, will we see these two friends reunite one more time in season 5?
Quimp
Quimp the Ferengi appeared in the second episode of Lower Decks ‘Envoys‘ as a way for Mariner to reignite Boimler’s mojo after a string of embarrassing incidents on Tulgana IV. Quimp’s theatrical embodiment of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s early Ferengi was hilarious to see and heart-warming when Mariner’s well-intentioned scheme was revealed.
In season 4 the Cerritos arrives at Ferenginar to discuss a monumental deal to join the United Federation of Planets. Whilst Captain Freeman meets with Grand Nagus Rom (Max Grodénchik) Mariner’s destructive cycle of self-sabotage is in full swing. Quimp comes to Mariner’s emotional rescue, using their deep friendship to help her understand she doesn’t have a reason to rebel any more.
We’re certain Mariner’s in a more stable place now and we’re greatful to Quimp for his help. We hope we get to see Quimp again in season 5 – every season should have a fab Ferengi, in our opinion!
Petra Aberdeen and the Entire California Class Fleet
Charismatic space archaeologist Petra Aberdeen (Georgia King) was first introduced in season 3 as a foil to Mariner and Boimler. Friend or Foe? Unclear at first as their initial relationship is an antagonistic rivalry and Aberdeen steals an artifact from a museum for the Ferengi. Aberdeen later reveals she was hired by the Ferengi to return the artifact, which was stolen by the museum. The two become lasting friends from here.
When Mariner resigns from Starfleet and joins Petra on her adventures, she slips back into her old habits of suspicion and self-sabotage. Snooping around Petra’s ship, we discover Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) had been funding the operation and they’re a force for good after all. Petra and Mariner come to the aid of the Cerritos during their impending destruction by the Badgey-controlled Texas class ships. Mariner and Petra call every California class ship to aid in the fight and victory prevails!
We’re unlikely to see Petra again, but we certainly wouldn’t mind a reunion!
D’Erika Tendi
One of our favourite aspects of Lower Decks has surely been seeing more of the Orions in Star Trek. We’ve learned more about this famous race of pirates in 4 seasons than in almost 55 years of Trek (Star Trek: Discovery excluded). In fact, it’s offensive to assume all Orions are pirates now! The wonderful Tendi is our beloved Orion in Starfleet seeking a life of science and exploration, after all. Along the journey, we’ve glimpsed into the ‘Mistress of Winter Constellations’ side of Tendi too.
In our first ever trip to Orion itself, Tendi rescues her sister D’Erika (Ariel Winter) on her wedding day. Would it really be a wedding without conflict though? D’Erika is resentful of D’Vana’s abandonment of the family and her joining Starfleet, leading to a huge fight. D’Erika wins the fight and D’Vana reassures her she can live up to her family’s expectations.
At the end of season 4 we’re left heartbroken as D’Vana and Rutherford are separated, seemingly for good. D’Vana is forced to return to Orion when D’Erika comes to Starfleet’s aid against Nick Locarno (Robert Duncan Mc’Neill) in an epic showdown.
We hope we get to see D’Erika again, being played so deliciously by Ariel Winter. We’ve saved this entry for last because season 5 picks up with D’Vana still on Orion. We can’t wait to see what she’s up to and how she’ll rejoin the Cerritos.
