Where Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3?

As of today, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 is officially over. So the question remains, what about Strange New Worlds Season 3? What do we know about what will happen or when it will come out? Thankfully the series was renewed for a third season earlier this year, but there’s been no accurate word on it since then. Now that Season 2 is over, there’s no better time to start digging and see what we know about Season 3.

The Strikes

As of the time of writing this, the Writers Guild of America has been striking for 100 days. We reported that when that happened, production on Strange New Worlds Season 3 had been suspended indefinitely. Filming was scheduled for May 2nd this year, although this production listing was removed on April 17th. This was the same day that the WGA voted overwhelmingly to strike.

One would assume then that production begins again once that strike ends. Alas, it’s not so simple. Since then, the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG-AFTRA) has also voted overwhelmingly to strike. It’s the first time actors and writers have been on strike since 1960. They’ve been striking over streaming royalties, poorer working conditions, and the rise of Artificial Intelligence, among other things. Production on Strange New Worlds Season 3 can begin only once both strikes end.

Unfortunately, since we first reported on the WGA strike, the representative of the production companies (AMPTP) has yet to come to the bargaining table. It’s a disappointing move that could see a lot of media we’re looking forward to, including Strange New Worlds Season 3, in production limbo for a long time. The full impacts of this strike are yet to be fully revealed, but it could be a long wait.

The Prodigy Situation

This is a “worst-case scenario”, but we all saw what happened with the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy. Like Strange New Worlds Season 3, it was renewed and very much official. Unlike Strange New Worlds, most of it was already finished and ready to go. But as a part of a cost-cutting measure, the series was removed from the Paramount+ streaming service, with season 2 now without a streaming home.

With fan support and the recent reveal that The Doctor (Robert Picardo) will be returning in Season 2, it looks likely that the series will find a new home. However, should this same fate befall Strange New Worlds, it may only add to the time it takes for the series to come out. Although with the popularity of Strange New Worlds, this may seem very unlikely, nobody thought it would happen with Prodigy, either.

What Will Happen in Season 3?

With the recent release of “Hegemony”, we have a pretty clear picture of how Season 3 has to start—the season ended on a cliffhanger, leaving the fates of many characters hanging in the balance. As we’ve established, Season 3 is happening, but it could easily be two years before it’s ready. So is there any information about the upcoming season that could help tide us over? We just might…

For those not aware, Daniel J Burns is a Senior Concept Artist and Art Director. His Twitter bio lists having worked on Strange New Worlds Season 3 and a handful of recent Star Trek projects. From this, we can tell that there are some massive designs for the third season of the series. While we don’t know what those designs are per se, Burns did recently share some old unused art for the Gorn Destroyers from Season 1.

Given the events of “Hegemony”, some new Gorn ships wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. We’d all love a better, more detailed look at the Gorn ships from that episode, and we’ll be getting it. Given the intensity of the skirmish at the end of Season 2, it could only get bigger from here! The team here are Trek Central are very excited to see where this goes.

Conclusion

So, the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is definitely on the way. Its eventual release is about as close to inevitable as it can get. Unfortunately, it will take a lot longer than originally intended to grace our screens, though. Because of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production has been halted for months. Until writers and actors are presented with a fair deal, it doesn’t look like there will be any new Star Trek series any time soon.

The removal of Prodigy only adds to confusion and uncertainty about the franchise’s future. That being said, Strange New Worlds is a far more popular series, so its removal seems unlikely. Even if it were, though, it’s very likely to be picked up elsewhere (something which Prodigy seems close to). Given that, we probably shouldn’t spend too much time thinking about this scenario.
