USS Farragut Arrives In Star Trek Starships Collection – Review

One of my most anticipated ships from Fanhome’s Star Trek Starships Collection has beamed down. This is the USS Farragut from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The Anson Mount-led series has recently given us a new look at the iconic Farragut, a ship future Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is stationed aboard. It marks Issue #3 of Fanhome’s Starships collection.

When writing this review, the USS Farragut is available for individual purchase on the Fanhome UK website. Typically, the Starships Collection is subscription-only. However, Fanhome has slowly offered some of the ships for individual purchase. It’s great if you don’t want an entire collection but really want a model of your favourite ship. You can view stock levels via the Fanhome website. Act fast to avoid disappointment.

The Farragut Model

Getting the USS Farragut right is a big task for the Star Trek Starships Collection. Mainly as this is one of Star Trek’s oldest starships. While this version is new, the actual USS Farragut was first mentioned in the 1967 Star Trek The Original Series. Fanhome has created a fantastic model which contains some great details. The saucer section perfectly fits into the Strange New Worlds era.

A word of warning: the nacelles of the Farragut do appear very fragile. I would not hold the model by the nacelles for fear of them potentially snapping off, or bending in their place. It’s understandable, as the nacelles of the Farragut are a bit more curved in their pylons than the previous Issue #1 of the USS Titan and Issue #2 of the USS Stargazer. Detail-wise, the writing for the ship’s name and registration is clearly marked and stands out well.

There is perhaps a detail discrepancy, but this depends on what episode this version of the Farragut is taken from. For example, in Strange New World’s Season 2 premiere episode, “The Broken Circle“, black stripes and white text were added to the ship’s nacelles. This also matches how the Farragut appears in Star Trek: Online. Fanhome’s model does not contain the black stripes, and the ship’s registry is written in Red Paint. This may mean the model is from the Season One series finale, which would make sense.

I’m a big fan of the ship’s deflector dish. It’s displayed very well on the underside of the saucer section. Given the ship’s limited focus in Strange New Worlds, the model showcases many details you won’t see on screen. For example, the shuttle bay next to the impulse engines. This is where models like this thrive. Being able to show us extra details of the iconic ships from the Star Trek series and movies.

A Sturdy Model

With these types of Star Trek Starships models, It’s always important to test how sturdy they are for display purposes. Then again, if you are running around the room pretending the model is at warp, I won’t judge you. As mentioned, the nacelles themselves are a little bit weak if you were to hold them. However, the saucer section is the die-cast metal part of the model. It’s quite sturdy to be held by the saucer section. I would recommend doing so if you are moving this one around.

Display stand-wise; the Farragut sits nicely here. It’s also tilted upwards ever so slightly to give the impression that the ship is in flight. One of my criticisms of Issue #2 was that the Sagan-class USS Stargazer feels like it will slide off the stand. Thankfully, this does not appear to be the case with the Farragut. However, I will say the stand mount clip – the transparent part – is rather large compared to the model. Yes, it needs to be adequately secured, but it strikes me as large and in your face. Especially compared to others in the collection.

The stand’s baseplate is a basic black plate. It does not have details written on it, like the previous Star Trek Starships Collection. I’m in a mixed mind about this. The previous collection featured the name and registry as a sticker on the bottom of the baseplate. Sure, you would never see this. In some ways, it made it unique to that model. But if you never saw it, did it matter?

Magazine Information

Fanhome thankfully provides a magazine booklet with the starships collection. Inside, you’ll find some great details on the ship. The first page confirms essential information, such as the class of the vessel. For example, the USS Farragut is a Bellerophon-class starship and measures 316 meters in length. As a big Starship Details fan, I personally really enjoy this type of information.

I really enjoy the design section of the magazine. This section explores the behind-the-scenes process of designing the ships we see on screen in the Star Trek Universe. In the USS Farragut collection, we’ve got behind-the-scenes insight with William Budge, the VFX Art Director of Strange New Worlds. He was responsible for the design of the USS Farragut and would report to Production Designer Jonathan Lee.

Concept artwork is included in the magazine, which shows how the design evolved from concept to what we see on-screen. The magazine also includes some great renders showing the scale of the USS Farragut next to Captain Pike’s USS Enterprise. Additionally, there is a great view of the ship’s Dedication Plaque. It’s especially great that ships from the Strange New Worlds era use two dedication plaques, so we’ve got a great view of both.

I wish the magazine’s final page included a preview of the upcoming collection. Seeing a new render of the next starship would be cool and help me get excited about the Star Trek Starships Collection.

Conclusion

Overall, the USS Farragut is an excellent entry into the Star Trek Starships Collection from Fanhome. Priced at £55.00, it’s not one I would rush to pick up simply because I’m a bigger fan of other starships in the collection. Still, this is a great ship to add to your collection if you’re a fan of Strange New Worlds and Star Trek Starships.

The upcoming Issue #4 is Star Trek: Online’s USS Enterprise-F, NCC-1701-F. The Odyssey-class starship was introduced in the MMO Video game. However, it recently appeared in the live-action series of Star Trek: Picard. Unfortunately, we did not get much time on-screen with this version of the Enterprise. Thankfully, Fanhome is giving us an XL model of the Odyssey to enjoy in March 2025. Check back for our review!
