One of the best parts of the latest season of Star Trek: Picard was the USS Stargazer. Introduced as the new “main” ship of the season, the detail work was insane. Not only that, the ship’s design connected with many fans of legacy Star Trek content. However, what went into creating this new starship? Did you also know that Star Trek: Picard’s Stargazer will be in Season 3? Well, technically. Recently the Stargazer was the focus of a new comic book series from IDW Publishing.
With the home media release of Star Trek: Picard Season 2, we’re looking at the bonus content. While we’ve already explored the gag reel and John De Lancie’s behind-the-scenes, we look at the USS Stargazer. As a special featurette on the Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Blu-Ray and DVD release, we learn more about the Sagan-class USS Stargazer. The home media release of Picard is out now. The limited-edition Blu-ray SteelBook, Blu-ray and DVD include every episode from the thrilling second season of the celebrated sci-fi series, alongside over one hour of special features.
Behind The Scenes of Star Trek: Picard’s Stargazer
The featurette contains an in-depth look into the USS Stargazer. However, it specifically dives into the ship’s creation and why it is so important to Star Trek. The legendary Michael Okuda explains how Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry, viewed starships. Specifically, Gene knew that the ships were “vehicles for storytelling”. Production Designer Dave Blass reveals how many teams it took to build the Stargazer.
Jason Zimmerman, a Supervising Producer, reveals how the ships of Star Trek are their own characters. This very much reminds me of the USS Enterprise-D. However, the Stargazer was very important to Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart). The character of Picard previously commanded the USS Stargazer’s original version before taking command of the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D. Star Trek: Picard Season 2 introduces us to the successor of his original ship, commanded by Captain Cristóbal Rios (Santiago Cabrera).
One of the confusing aspects of Star Trek: Picard’s Stargazer were the origins. In the first episode of season 2, Admiral Picard states it’s a refit but not his original ship. However, “refit” would traditionally refer to an older ship being rebuilt with new technology. Given this Stargazer has a different register and ship class, Trekkies treat it as a new unique starship.
The Legacy of Star Trek: Picard’s Stargazer
While the ending of Star Trek: Picard Season 2 saw the USS Stargazer under the command of Seven of Nine, we won’t see the ship again. However, that is almost a lie. While the actual USS Stargazer isn’t the main focus of Picard Season 3, it might as well be. The set designs for the Sagan class are being reused for the third and final seasons. Therefore the new hero ship, the USS Titan-A, will somewhat look like Star Trek: Picard’s Stargazer. Well, that is from the inside.
Conclusion
Star Trek: Picard Season 2 streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and is distributed concurrently on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories. Additionally, it airs on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada and streams on Crave. The upcoming Star Trek: Picard Season 3 beams down on February 16th 2023.
