Star Trek returns to the 32nd Century! All eyes are on the next live-action series from Paramount+. Yes, this is the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series. New details have been released from San Diego Comic-Con 2024! Now we know that Robert Picardo, Oded Fehr, Mary Wiseman, and Tig Notaro join the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Picardo and Notaro will be series regulars as they reprise their roles as The Doctor and Jett Reno. However, Fehr and Wiseman will be guest starts. They will reprise their roles as Admiral Charles Vance and Sylvia Tilly. Little is known about the plot of Starfleet Academy. It seems the series will follow a brand new set of cadets. They’ll be learning what it takes to become Starfleet Officers!
The Cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Robert Picardo recently reprised his “The Doctor” role for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2. The animated series sees The Doctor onboard the newly launched USS Voyager-A. But how does The Doctor appear in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy? One answer could be to do with the Voyager episode “Living Witness”. The events of that episode’s storyline, which sees the activation of the EMH Backup, occur in the late 31st Century. Though there has never been a clear date. It could match up with the Academy’s time setting.
Additionally, Tig Notaro will reprise her role as Starfleet Engineer Jett Reno. Mary Wiseman is back as Sylvia Tilly, and Oded Fehr will return as Fleet Admiral Charles Vance.
Casting details for Starfleet Academy have already been announced. Actress Holly Hunter will play Starfleet Academy’s Chancellor. She’ll also be in the role of an unnamed Captain. Additionally, Kerrice Brooks, Karim Diane, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard and Zoe Steiner have been announced as joining the cast. However, most recently, actress and comedian Gina Yashere was added to the cast. They’ll have to face against Paul Giamatti, who plays the series’ recurring villain.
Details for Starfleet Academy
A recent Variety article revealed that sets were already being built. They are housed at Pinewood Toronto’s ‘Star Trek Stage’, recently re-named in honour of the franchise. According to the article, it features the “largest contiguous set ever constructed for a Star Trek series. New sets include a central academic atrium that will span two stories, an amphitheater, classrooms, a mess hall, and an idyllic walkway lined with trees.”
With its focus on higher education — from the throes of budding romance to the pressures of academic achievement to the angst of painful self-discovery — “Starfleet Academy” is part of a wider strategy to expand what a “Star Trek” show can look like.
“These are kids who’ve never had a red alert before. They never had to operate a transporter or be in a phaser fight.”
Ultimately, the Star Trek Academy series has been coming for a long time. Since the dawn of modern Star Trek with CBS All Access, later Paramont+, there have been whispers of a potential series. Kurtzman even spoke about the series back in 2021. However, it was not until March 2023 that the series was officially announced. With filming taking place in 2024 and lengthy post-production expected, we won’t see Academy until 2025.
