NEW Tone & Cameos for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5!

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is just around the corner! In a recent interview with TVLine.com, Sonequa Martin-Green teased some interesting developments for this final season! Not only a shift in tone for this final season, but more information about Burnham and Booker’s (David Ajala) relationship, and possibly some cameos!

As the last Season of the Star Trek series, which kicked off modern Trek, this is something special. Paramount+ likely knows what they have on their hands here. Still, the cast has got some new additions. For example, Sci-Fi legend Callum Keith Rennie has joined as Starfleet Captain Rayner.

Discovery’s Tonal Shift

Discovery’s tone has always been a dark one sprinkled with optimism and hope, with most seasons showing how to be our better selves in times of adversity, whether they be wars in Season 2 or massive global/galactic events in Season 4. It seems that though we are still having Discovery’s galactic threat again for this final season, it’ll be balanced with a sense of adventure and fun.

Even though the stakes are as high as they could possibly be, as there is a big thing in season five. There is also a great sense of adventure and fun that we were really adamant about injecting into the show. So it’s a bit of a tonal shift I think people will enjoy.

Sonequa Martin-Green

We’ve heard numerous times that Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery will be a treasure hunt. Jonathan Frakes himself described the final season as “Indiana Jones,” who directed the first half of the finale of Season 5. Trailers tease a treasure hunt against the villainous duo of L’ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow) to discover an Ancient Power that has been hidden for centuries.

Discovery Season 5 Cameos

Sonequa Martin-Green also teases some cameos outside of the main crew for the final season, but who could they possibly be? With Discovery in the 32nd century, there are only so many options to choose from. Examples from Discovery could be characters like Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) could be a possibility, but it wouldn’t be a surprise considering her prior appearances in Season 4.

One possibility floated around by fans online is fan-favourite Emergency Medical Hologram, the Doctor (Robert Picardo). We know that a copy of his program survived into the year 3074 in the Delta Quadrant and would eventually return to the Alpha Quadrant. This journey would take place after the Burn in 3069, so there is no issue of The Doctor’s vessel blowing up on the journey home. Could The Doctor reprise his role in Starfleet in the 32nd Century? It definitely would be a worthy cameo!

Book and Burnham

At the end of Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery, the relationship between Book and Burnham was quite frayed. Book had betrayed Burnham in trying to get revenge against the 10-C for the destruction of his home, Kwejian. Having made the right decision and helped to connect with the 10-C, Book was given an alleviated sentence for aiding Federation relief efforts for families displaced by the DMA.

The trailers show the two working together again, so it is possible that we have a time jump between seasons, and the Book has served its time already. However, when asked about this reunited couple, Sonequa Martin-Green was quite close-lipped about it all. Their relationship will definitely come up in Season 5, so we look forward to seeing what is revealed!

Discovery Season 5 Release Date

We have not “officially” gotten a release date for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5. However, we could be seeing it sooner than we thought. The Paramount+ App in the UK gave the release date as April 4th 2024! Whether this was a mistake or not, we will have to see when it is officially announced. However, it looks promising that we may see it at the beginning of April 2024!

This would actually be in time for “First Contact Day“. Taking place on April 5th each year, the date is widely celebrated by Star Trek fans worldwide. In-universe, this is the historical date that Humanity made contact with The Vulcans. The event can be seen in Star Trek: First Contact.
