Last month it was announced that Noah Hawley will write and direct the next Star Trek film. With little details given at the time, many Trekkies assumed it would be the fourth installment of the film franchise featuring Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk. Though that idea now seems lightyears away.
Actor Simon Pegg, known for playing Scotty, sat down with Gold Derby and shed some light on the upcoming movie. Previously Pegg wrote Star Trek Beyond, alongside Doug Jung, with many speculating that he might return to write the next film. At the moment, it looks like he has no involvement.
Pegg mentioned that he knows as much as we do. He has praised Hawley as a “brilliant writer always creating interesting stuff“. Pegg mentioned that he did not think he or his former Star Trek castmates are currently planned to be involved with the project. “Whether or not we’re involved with that I don’t know”, said Pegg.
The actor went on to mention that he thinks Hawley’s movie is not necessarily going to be Star Trek 4 like many are currently speculating and hoping for. Simon Pegg’s full comments to Gold Derby are below.
“No, I don’t know anything about it. I think – Noah Hawley’s been hired to write something for Star Trek, which is very exciting because he’s a brilliant writer and always creating interesting stuff. Whether or not we’re involved with that I don’t know. I don’t think so. I don’t think – I don’t think that Noah’s thing is necessarily gonna be Star Trek 4. I’m talking out of my a** as usual, which gets me into trouble all the time. But we’ll see what happens with that.”
We were all super excited to hear that there is still life in the Star Trek film franchise, even with little detail. Simon Pegg even mentioned that Quintin Tarantino’s Trek Movie is apparently “still kind of in the mix“. Recently Tarantino himself suggested that he was “steering away” from the project. Currently, it is unknown if anything is happening with his Star Trek movie.
Things are still moving around in the Star Trek film world. Trekkies will need to wait a little longer to see how it all plays out. As we enter the new year, more news is expected of course.
Star Trek is on course for a fantastic year ahead. 2020 brings a brand new series in the form of “Picard”, set to air January 23rd. CBS’s Star Trek: Discovery series is also set to return with Season 3 at some point in 2020.
