Our beloved Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Enterprise will be back on our screens soon, in the form of new Star Trek: Short Treks.
Recently we learned more about the 6 new Short Treks that will be coming our way between Season 2 and Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery and surprisingly unlike the first batch of Short Treks, these are not linking to Star Trek: Discovery. Of the 4 live action Short Treks we are receiving, 3 of them will be based on Captain Pike’s Enterprise. Now this is great news as many fans have been wanting a Pike Series featuring Anson Mount and his castmates, and these Short Treks will keep us satisfied for the moment.
One of the live action Short Treks will be about Ensign Spock’s first day onboard the U.S.S Enterprise, where he and Number One, Rebecca Romijn, get stuck in a Turbolift, featuring Number One being asked some weird and annoying questions by a curious Ensign Spock, including something about Eggplants? Weird times… Anyway, we did report the news last month that Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijin had worked with Director Mark Pellington on an upcoming Short Trek. This seems to be the one in question.
There next Short Trek, invlolving Tribbles, seems to have some sort of horror twist to it, as the Tribbles are apparently eating the crew of the Enterprise…. Yes, you read that right. Apparently some science experiment has gone wrong due to a lab breach and the Tribbles are now eating the crew if they show weakness. Actor H. Jon Benjamin who is best known for playing Sterling Archer, from the show “Archer”, looks to be appearing in this Short Trek
The 3rd Enterprise-based Short Trek appears to be centered around the idea of Anson Mount’s Captain Pike being captured… we are not entirely sure on the details of this specific Short Trek, looks like Pike has been captured or imprisoned, as the other female character with him informs him that he is a prisoner, and therefore his orders carry no weight anymore. Regardless, it seems like an interesting Short Trek anyway, so we’re looking forward to it!
The final live action Short Trek will apparently be a precursor to the brand new Star Trek: Picard series, set 15 years before the show approximately in 2384. Hopefully, this Short Trek will set up the brand new show and give us an idea on the current state of the Star Trek Galaxy. It’s been almost 20 years since we’ve checked in on the Star Trek Universe, it would be nice to know how everything is doing in the grand scheme of things. This Short Trek might cover the destruction of Romulus, or another specific event which will be referenced in the series. For the moment, we do not know.
We have received titles for all 6 Short Treks and they are as follows:
- The Girl who Made the Stars
- Children of Mars
- The Trouble with Edward
- Ask Not
- Ephraim & Dot
Now, most of these titles do not give away much, but if we may be so bold as to guess “Q&A” may be the return of our favourite trickster, Q? We shall see. This could easily be done in an animated Short Trek to add some crazy to what Q can do, without going too over budget. Jack personally thinks that “Q&A” refers to the episode with Ensign Spock and Number one, simply because of how many questions Spock was asking her while stuck in the Turbo lift. “Ask Not” is also a good candidate for the very curious Ensign Spock who tends to ask too many questions, so we’ll just have to wait and find out!
“Ephraim & Dot” may be the tribble episode, due to the name Ephraim relating to the Hebrew word for “being Fruitful” and the ability to bear children. Which would make logical sense, but is quite a stretch regardless.
We don’t have a release date yet for this series of Short Treks, but they will probably be released between now and Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, probably even before the release of Star Trek: Picard, which has been slated for early 2020, as one of the episodes will tie into that series.
Another thing to mention is that Alex Kurtzman, Showrunner for Star Trek: Discovery, asked the audience at the Star Trek Panel if they wanted a Captain Pike series. The audience cheered very loudly, and Kurtzman said “We’ll think about it”. Hopefully that means they have more with Anson Mount’s Pike in the future in a reoccuring series. On the topic of a Pike series, I do strongly believe there is something going on behind the scenes regarding Anson Mount and CBS / Secret Hideout. Sadly, there was no big announcement about further series at Star Trek: Las Vegas, but he did do a LOT of crowd teases.
